Glucosamine sulfate / glucosamine hydrochloride / combination products

The clearest current human evidence is still in knee osteoarthritis, where glucosamine has mixed signals for pain and stiffness and a separate, cautious signal for slower worsening on X-rays in some long-term studies. Results vary a lot by formulation: some glucosamine sulfate studies look better than glucosamine hydrochloride or glucosamine-plus-chondroitin combinations, and none of this proves cartilage regrowth or a cure.

Side effects, medication, and product cautions
Short-term studies mostly report mild stomach upset, nausea, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, or similar digestive side effects. Product formulations vary, and glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, and glucosamine-plus-chondroitin products should not be treated as interchangeable; use extra caution if you take warfarin or other blood thinners, have diabetes or prediabetes and monitor blood sugar, have asthma, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. One small challenge study did not find an immediate reaction in shellfish-allergic adults using specific products, but that is not a blanket safety guarantee for all products.
